Bayanat Labs Arab World Places Atlas
Searching a map of the Arab world means dealing with the same pharmacy listed as «صيدلية التمامي» in one place and "Al Temamy Pharmacy" in another, and street names that switch between Arabic, English and French. This dataset brings the region together in one set of tables built from the open Overture Maps release of 21 October 2026: 1,301,051 points of interest in 259 categories, each placed in its country and, where the source has them, its region and county; 373,035 named streets grouped from OpenStreetMap road segments; 185,214 administrative places from countries down to neighbourhoods, with every published name variant; and 277,889 street and place-name pairs plus 37,664 business-name pairs in Arabic and Latin script, with fixed train, validation and test splits. Every Arabic name also has a search key made with the bayanat-norm-v1 recipe from arabic-normalize. Phone numbers, e-mail addresses and social-media links are left out. This is map data conflated by machine from several platforms, not a field survey: coverage is uneven, and only 396,783 places carry an Arabic name.
| Licence | Component-specific: CDLA-Permissive-2.0, Apache-2.0 or CC0-1.0 per place (Overture places); ODbL-1.0 for streets, divisions and place-name pairs (© OpenStreetMap contributors); Apache-2.0 for build scripts |

Key numbers
Counted by script from the released files. Each key number is read from stats.json in the Hugging Face dataset and pinned to its SHA-256; a checksum file in the dataset lists the SHA-256 of every file.

Intended uses
- Match a typed Arabic or Latin-script place name to candidate places, and rank them by country, region, county and H3 cell.
- Build street, district and city vocabularies for Arabic address parsers, gazetteers and form auto-complete.
- Train or evaluate Arabic–Latin transliteration and name translation on real map names with fixed splits.
- Compare category density across countries, regions and H3 cells.
Out of scope
- Treating it as a complete or verified business register: entries can be closed, duplicated, miscategorized or misplaced.
- Contacting businesses or individuals: phone numbers, e-mail addresses and social-media links are not included.
- Drawing conclusions about borders: country assignment follows Overture's published divisions.
Rights at a glance
Training, display, redistribution and synthetic-voice use are separate permissions.
| Use | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Training | Allowed | Allowed under each part's licence. Places rows are CDLA-Permissive-2.0, Apache-2.0 or CC0-1.0; streets, divisions and place-name pairs are ODbL-1.0. |
| Display | Allowed | With attribution: Overture Maps Foundation; © OpenStreetMap contributors for streets, divisions and place-name pairs; geoBoundaries or Esri Community Maps for the division rows under CC BY 4.0. |
| Redistribution | Allowed | Keep the licence texts and Foursquare notice for places; an adapted database of the ODbL parts that you share publicly must stay under ODbL-1.0. |
| Synthetic voice | Not applicable | No audio is included. |
Limitations
- Coverage is urban-heavy and comes mostly from one contributing platform; Comoros, Djibouti, Mauritania, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen are thin.
- Only 396,783 places carry an Arabic-script name; many Gulf listings are English-only at source.
- Most places have a low Overture confidence score; filter on the confidence field for high-precision uses.
- The Arabic and Latin halves of a bilingual business name are not always translations or transliterations of each other.
- Overture publishes Palestine as two areas (XW and XG), shown here as PS, and includes Western Sahara within Morocco; Bayanat Labs takes no position on any boundary.
